Our Delivery Story

My Father-in-law feeding me ice chips during delivery!
My wonderful nurse and doctor!
Our excitement started last Monday, February 2, 2009! We woke at 4 a.m., very nervous, anxious, and excited about the delivery process and the arrival of our baby boy. We arrived the hospital around 5:30 a.m. where they were waiting for my arrival. There were NO BABIES in the nursery, and I was their only patient that morning! CRAZY! So, they did all the routine questioning and TRIED to put an IV in. The poor sweet nurse, she tried in my right hand and hit a valve, and CONTINUED to try to poke and prod on my hand until I couldn't take it any longer and literally wanted to slap her to stop. After a few minutes she gave up, thank GOD! By that point it was almost time for a shift change at 7 a.m. so she waited for the next nurse to get my IV started. The new nurse came in about 7:30 for my new IV in the other hand, and had no problems, but it was still painful. At that point they only started me on fluids. We waited for the doctor to come around. About 8:30 he came in and examined me. 90% effaced, station 1, still closed though. So, they inserted a pill that in some people helps the dilation process start. It did nothing for me, I layed there with no results or changes until the doctor came around at noon. He checked me again, no change. They then broke my water at 12:30. That is all it took to get the party started, by 2 p.m. I was begging for my epidural. Thank God for modern medicine. I can not imagine doing that natural. WoW! So, after the epidural about 2:30, my pains pretty well stopped. My epidural took affect on the left side and not the right, so they had me lay on my right side for about half an hour. The baby didn't like this position and his heart rate started dropping. The next thing I know they are turning me and re positioning me like crazy to try to help the baby and his heart rate. It scared Lance and I both because when they checked me at 2:30p.m., I was only at 3 cm. At about 3:30 another nurse came in to help my nurse re position me, she asked my nurse if she had checked me lately, my nurse said no. They checked me and I was at a 7. They rolled me over on my right side and checked me again 2 minutes later and said I was a 9. The next thing I knew they were hurrying around preparing the room for delivery. In a matter of minutes I was pushing. I pushed just a few minutes when my doctor came in to check on things. He said I would be pushing a while and said he was going back to the office. That scared me because I KNEW this baby was coming out. I guess he changed his mind on going back to the office because in less than 5 more minutes of pushing, my nurse told me to stop because she did not want to deliver this baby. At that time the doctor walked in and in just a few minutes we had a B-I-G boy! Delivery was honestly easy and not bad at all like I expected. It was very doable -AFTER- the epidural. And, considering I was only in active labor from 12:30 to 4:20 p.m. it wasn't so bad!
Kaden Angus Mabe was born at 4:20 p.m., I had requested him to be placed directly onto my chest, and to breastfeed immediately, so he didn't get weighed until about an hour later after birth. He weighed 9 pounds and 3 ounces! He was 21 inches long, and his head was 13 1/2 !!!
I had wanted to avoid an episiotomy if possible, and unfortunately ended up tearing into the flesh to one side, it is VERY painful, and I wish I would have never mentioned to the doctor the I didn't want an episiotomy! It would have been far better to be cut that way than the way I ended up torn. My stitched tore open on Friday afternoon and now I am having to deal with healing up an open flesh wound, which I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy!
I give LOTS of credit and love to my nurse, she was AWESOME!!! And, she did all the work, the doctor literally arrives to catch the baby. And, to sew up the mess. Nurses are much like teachers, they do all the work and get no credit for it! Except the make considerably better salaries than teachers. I am thankful for a good staff and doctor though.
Immediately after delivery, they brought in a dinner tray and a Coca-Cola. If you know me at all you know that I do not and can not drink Coca-Cola. The caffeine in one Cola will make me shake and have accelerated heart rate, so I try to stay away from Caffeine all together. But, let me tell you, my nurse stuck a straw in the Coke can and stuck it in my mouth. That was the BEST drink I have ever had in my life!!! I'll never forget that Coke!
Our baby boy came out with light RED hair and blue eyes. He is just precious! He knew exactly what to do, and has nursed perfectly since birth. I am so thankful for this because I certainly didn't know what to do. He has been a trooper, and doesn't seem to notice or mind that I am in a considerable amount of pain still with the open flesh wound and breast engorgement, plus a yeast infection in one of my breasts. FUN! Pain in two places at once, plus the cramping that comes with breast feeding and the blisters. But, let me tell you I wouldn't trade the pain for anything, because I have the BEST reward for all of the pain. It's just funny to me that the actual delivery went so smooth and easy and the pain is afterwards...
It has been really hard to get a routine established with Kaden because of lots of visitors during the daytime. I have been unable to nap/sleep when he does which makes nights REALLY hard when your tired and hurting. My gift of knowledge for any expecting moms, don't have visitors the whole first week. FOR REAL!!! I'm still exhausted, and the doctor said yesterday that it will take approximately 10 more days for my battle wounds to heal. I am looking forward to being pain free!
Kaden has been such a blessing from God in my life, and I just sit and look at him, hold him, love on him, and thank Jesus for him each day. I truly know what motherhood is all about now. You worry about them from day 1. But, they bring so much joy! We are so thankful for a healthy baby and an easy delivery. Thank you all for your many well wishes, gifts, and prayers. We love you all! A much over due update on my family
I am so sorry that I have not been able to update you all sooner on the condition of my family members who went through all the horrible tramas last week. First of all, an update on Tonya (my step-sister) and her family.
Tonya is still in the hospital in Midland recovering in rehab. She has an injured pelvis, neck, and arm. Her spirits seem unusually good for a person going through so much pain. Her mother, Vicki, is still in the hospital as well and improving daily. They hope to do surgery on her soon to fix her arm. Please continue to pray for Tonya & Vicki's healing in this horribly emotional time for them. Tonya is hoping to be released from the hospital by Thursday, and fly home to Arizona Thursday. L.R.'s funeral is scheduled for Friday afternoon (Tonya's husband). Please pray for her safety in travelling home and for peace in dealing with this horrible loss of her husband. I have spoken with Tonya on the phone a few times, and she seems very grounded, she is a tower of strength. She is excited to get home to her baby, Lewis, who flew home Sunday with her in-laws. Lewis will keep her busy and going, thank God for babies!
Tonya's brother, Brian's memorial service is not planned at this time. They are waiting for both Tonya and Vicki to get out of the hospital to schedule it. Please pray for Vicki as she heals her body and deals with the heartbreak of loosing her son, and Tonya her baby brother.
Baby Lewis is doing well, and Tonya can't wait to get home to him.
Other Update:
My baby cousin, Montana Lane Fisher, was layed to rest on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at 2:00p.m. It was a very bitter sweet day for Lance & I. I never dreamed that I wouldn't be there to support Kimberly in a day such as this and it broke my heart. I woke up in the hospital from no sleep from delivery, broken hearted on Wed. and cryed until I thought I couldn't cry anymore. My heart ached for Montana and Kim, and I felt so guilty for being so upset around my new beautiful baby. We got dismissed from the hospital early afternoon on Wed. On the drive home, I realized that it was time for Montana's service to begin. So, on the drive home from the hospital with our new baby, which was supposed to be the happiest day of my life, I instead cryed my head off and thought my heart would literally break it hurt so bad. About half way home, I sitting in the back seat with Kaden, looked down for some unknown reason into the door pocket of the car door. It looked like a ring pop sucker, and I instantly thought it was probably left by Chloe, Montana's big sister, in my car at some point. I reached down to retrieve it, and it was Montana's binky. My heart exploded and I balled my eyes out and cryed out for Montana. He had lost the binky back in July or August when Kim & he had gone with me for the day to register at Babies R Us for my baby Kaden. We had all searched my car for it that day, Kim, me, Chloe, Grandmother, everyone even Lance, and didn't find it.
So, Lance said, 'This is Montana's message to me and my family that he is riding with baby Kaden and that he loves us.' Oh my God, what a roller coater of a day. I have never been so sad and heartbroken and so full of love for my new baby all in the same day. I felt/feel guilty for my baby because I feel guilty to grieve when I have such a precious gift. And, I've just hated it for him that everyone is so sad when he was born. At the same time everyone needed him here now, we all needed good news and a wonderful new life.
The poem in Montana's service bulletin I want to share here in his memory.
Little Angels
God sent an angel to the earth...
The sweetest angel too
And for such a tiny little thing,
He had so much to do.
He knew he did not have
Much time upon this earth to stay,
So he did not waste a second;
He got started right away.
His eyes were bright and sparkly,
He took in every turn.
He did not miss a single thing,
Because this Angel came to learn!
God sent him here to touch the
Hearts of those he could not reach...
He taught them courage, strength and faith,
Because this little Angel came to teach.
His tiny little body
Was so full of God above,
You felt it when you held him,
Because Montana came to love.
In fifteen short months he managed
What many never will.
When he went home to Jesus,
His purpose was fulfilled.
He learned and taught, loved and played,
He learned his lessons well.
I know he was so proud of him
When he went home to dwell.
But when I miss him OH-SO-MUCH,
I can almost hear God say,
Please understand, his work was done...
Montana did not come to stay.
These are some of my memories with baby Montana.

This is two days shy of 40 weeks, at 4a.m., ready for the ride to hospital for our induction day. (Little did we know this B-I-G belly had a 9 pound baby boy in it! WoW!) Sorry for the belly shot, but I want to remember what 40 weeks looked and felt like!
We are up, our alarm woke us at 4 a.m., and we are about to head to the hospital. We should have a bouncing baby boy later today! We are nervous and anxious and excited all at the same time. Please pray for a safe delivery. We will update after the baby is here!!!

Urgent Prayer Requests!

This is Kimberly & Montana Christmas Day at 14 months, almost 15 months old.
This is sweet Montana Lane Fisher at Thanksgiving, almost 14 months old.
My heart hurts. That is all I can say. My Jesus is sustaining me right now. Today has been a very unimaginable day for my family. Montana Lane Fisher, born October 5, 2007, my first cousin Kimberly's son, passed away this morning (January 31, 2009). If you have followed my blogs you know Montana, I took off work last year to be in labor and delivery with Kim. I have documented Montana's life since day one. I was the first to see him, and he was supposed to be a precious playmate to our little Kaden on the way. I can not begin to tell you all how precious this baby boy was to me and our family. PLEASE LIFT KIMBERLY up in prayer, she is lost right now in pain and grief.Just when I thought this day could never get worse, I received yet more bad news. My step-sister, Tonya and my step-brother Brian had stopped just last night to visit me and Lance at my house on their drive back to Arizona. (Tonya & Brain had driven in for the funeral of their grandfather Clanton). Also with Tonya & Brain were their mother Vicki, Tonya's husband, L.R., and Tonya and L.R.'s baby Lewis. The four of them visited us at our house just last night, not leaving until around 8 p.m. to start their LONG drive back to Arizona. They had come to meet my Lance, and to bring a baby gift for our little man. I actually talked to Tonya this morning(Jan. 31) at 9:30 a.m., she was trying to console me about Montana. Apparently they where in a vehicle accident after my talking with Tonya. They were in Pecos, Tx, which is very near in the middle of no where Texas. They were all air lifted. L.R. Robedeau (Tonya's husband) died. Brian Lee Clanton (Tonya's brother and my step brother) died. Vicki (Tonya and Brian's Mother) has a broken arm, but is otherwise ok we believe by the report given. Tonya is ok, but we have no report on her injuries, not positive on her current condition until family can get to her. And, praise Jesus baby Lewis is reportedly doing well. They expect him to be released from the hospital to family as soon as they can get to him. Family is on their way to sort all of this out, it's a LONG way to Pecos, Tx. Please, please pray for Tonya, who at last report has not been told yet that L.R. and Brian have passed. (They are waiting for family to get to her first)I feel like it is all a really bad dream, the whole day. I have tryed so hard to rely on my Jesus and my sweet husband today to keep me grounded and calm for the sake of my baby. I have been having contractions all day, but as usual nothing to go in for. I did contact my doctor at home just to talk with him about all this grief because I was worried it would somehow affect my baby. He said that at this point, babies tend to do surprisingly well when Mom is under grief and stress, and since I am scheduled for Monday morning he thinks both me and Kaden will be fine. He told me to try to stay calm (as much as I can), and to not worry about Kaden unless I don't feel movement. And, my sweet baby boy has let me know all day long that he is fine by stretching and moving around in my belly. I have tryed to rest tonight, and slept about 3 hours from exhaustion mentally and physically. I awoke at 3 a.m. with the nightmare again playing in my head. So, here I am awake, praying, crying, broken-hearted asking you to pray for my family. I will try my best to update you all as I get more details on Tonya's family as well as Montana. We are still scheduled for Monday morning at the hospital to induce labor for baby Kaden Angus to be born. I pray I have the strength and energy to do well for me and my baby Monday. And, I pray to have a JOY update on Monday, as I fear my family can not handle anymore bad news at this time. Love, Kelly
